How To Love Your Body The Way It Is.

comments 14

How to love your body the way it is, is one of the most asked questions I get.  As women, we are always taught that to have a good body we have to try and take up less space.

Well, I’m here to tell you that That’s Bullshit!

When I first started taking photos and blogging and posting on Instagram a few years ago one of the silliest things I thought about when I started was that I was not skinny enough to do any of it. Back then, there was no representation for women like me, and it wasn’t until the body confidence movement started and I got my own head out of my ass that I realized that –

  1. I was Plus Size because I did not fit into standard sizes at all.
  2. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it.
  3. I was not going to continue to over exercise and starve myself to be something that I was not.
  4. If I wanted to see representation of women like me I was going to have to join in and start posting my damn self.

To be honest, when I first started posting photos I was so nervous about being judged. I feared the day when an internet troll would try to break my recently ignited confidence, but instead of a whole bunch of hate I got support and messages from women who said looking at my posts helped them. Plus there’s that handy block button for the sad sacks who try and pick on people.  Slowly but surely I started to post more and with it my outfits became a bit more daring and a tad more revealing and I started to have no problem wearing my clothing out.

I started to learn that if I let fear hold me back then I would never accomplish anything in life.

I think a lot of people think that one day I woke up and everything was okay in the world and that I was able to love my body, and that is a lie.

In the beginning, I had days when I would sit in front of my mirror and cry because of the way my stomach looked that morning. There were also days when I hated the fact that I had a double chin.

“I know that it seems like an impossible task to like your body in a world where there are systems in place to make you hate it, but I promise you it is possible. I will say this once, twice, and three thousand times, but I think it’s important that everyone diversify their feed. It was such an eye-opening experience for me when I was first starting to like my body to see that there were actual people out there who looked like me. I would try the hashtag #plussizefashion and the account @fatwomenofcolor to start off with.” – Jasmine Grimes, Simply Be Article

Think of body confidence and loving yourself like a river. It ebbs and flows. There are going to be days when you start to doubt yourself and negative thoughts come back in because that’s life. There is nothing in this world that is perfect all of the time. Trust me. I can say though that as you start to walk this path the days of hating what you look like and being self-conscious will start to be replaced by smiling at yourself in the mirror as you pass and loving the way you look until the good days outweigh the bad. That is all we can hope for.

I hope you all decide to walk this path with me and make sure to leave a comment below and let me know how this all started for you.

  1. I definitely agree with this. You should be proud of your body, it’s your body after all. My friend, she’s an account recently posted underwear selfies for the first time and it has massively improved her confidence. She was worried what people would think but everyone has been great. She said it was two things, to be proud of her body and also to show that she wears nice underwear. As Gemma says why should it be a secret as to what colour her underwear normally is or what style she wears and says that in itself is empowering. She is trying to get me to do the same but as a straight guy I don’t know if guys do underwear selfies!

That is so amazing! I’m so happy for her, and yes I think it’s okay for men to post underwear selfies as well. Just because other people are not doing it, doesn’t mean it does not need to be done. Being confident in your own body applies to both men and women and everything in between. I would say go for it because your photo could inspire others to do the same.

  2. This actually inspired me to quickly take an underwear pic and send it to her to see what she said. She said it was fantastic and I definitely should post it. The funniest thing she said was why have I been covering up such nice boxers! That made me feel better too! So yes you are right underwear selfies are fine for everyone as it’s about confidence in your own body. I’ll be happy to do this. In my blue Superdry underwear!

    • Love this! I take underwear selfies as they make me feel good about myself and it is a big ego boost to receive nice comments from people. Whenever I buy new underwear I always take a picture of me wearing it. Nothing wrong in guys doing it at all. Once you have done one and you’ll be the same, it will give you a huge boost in confidence. You’ll end up doing it all the time like to show what color boxers you’re wearing etc. Just have fun. Just always ignore anything negative.

Hahaha yeah, no need to hide them, but in all seriousness way to go! Everyone should be confident and comfortable in their own skin.

      • I can honestly say I am so glad I did this. Apart from one person everyone has been great in the comments when I posted it. Everyone is right it does do a lot for your confidence. It’s funny because I’m out with friends (including my friend Gemma) who have all seen it and the girls too. And yes of course it’s a great feeling when they say they like my underwear I’m wearing. I will definitely be doing this again. Haha yes my boxers will not be hidden anymore and yeah Kylie I will definitely post pics to show off what colour they are. Underwear selfies are definitely the way forward!

        • They are the way forward! Its like your being slightly rebellious and everyone feels sexy in their own underwear. So its makes you feel even better about yourself that you can let everyone else see you in it! And the main thing is you know yourself that you look sexy! Going public in your underwear is the best thing you can do to be body confident it really is.

        • Told you! Once you have done one you realise its great and good fun. And your real friends will always love things like that. You’ll be doing it all the time now. If you’re ever being down its good way to cheer yourself up. If I’m going out then I often post a picture in my underwear, and so do my girlfriends, just to show it off to each other and again give us a boost. You will probably do that so if you take an underwear selfie as you are getting ready when you go out everyone will know what underwear you are wearing.

  3. This is so cool and yes everyone should be proud of their bodies. This is why the likes of Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner post pictures like this as even they want to feel sexy and nothing does that more than posting a photo of yourself in your bra and panties. We need to see more guys doing it in their underwear so good on you Darren for doing it!

    • Jasmine Grimes April 15, 2017

Exactly. Men can be just as self-conscious as women, but women have just a little bit more representation. We need more brawn models so that way the boys who are growing up, and even other grown men can see that there is nothing wrong with them.

      • Exactly we are all human beings and we all come in different shapes and sizes but still beautiful!

  4. This is so cool! There is nothing sexier than posting a picture of yourself in your bra and panties. Its true more guys should do it so way to go Darren!

  5. Thanks everyone! And I can testify this really does work, people are not exaggerating. Any one here thinking you can’t do it, you would look stupid or embarrassed honestly don’t. Don’t worry about what other people will think, be proud of your body. No one will judge you. And don’t worry about work colleagues seeing you in your underwear it’s fine.
